Happy New Year, builders!
If 2025 was the year of “hidden cables,” 2026 is shaping up to be the year of extreme thermal density.
With the holiday dust settling and CES 2026 kicking off, the hardware landscape has shifted dramatically. NVIDIA’s RTX 50-series “Blackwell” cards are finally in the wild, Intel’s LGA 1851 socket is maturing, and the line between “computer case” and “art installation” is blurrier than ever.
Whether you’re planning a refresh or a completely new rig, here is the state of liquid cooling in 2026—and the trends you need to watch.
1. The Wattage Wars: Taming the RTX 5090
Let’s address the elephant in the room: Power.
The new RTX 5090 and 5080 cards are absolute monsters. While air coolers have ballooned to 4-slot bricks, liquid cooling has effectively transitioned from “optional enthusiast perk” to “performance requirement” for these cards.
We are seeing a massive surge in demand for the new “Astral” and “TUF” series water blocks.
-
Why it matters: Rumors of 600W+ power spikes on flagship cards mean that active cooling on the back of the PCB (Active Backplates) is becoming standard for stability, not just aesthetics.
-
What to look for: The new EK-Quantum Vector³ Astral series (now in stock at FTC) features completely redesigned jet plates to handle the concentrated heat hotspots of the Blackwell architecture.
2. Socket Science: Intel LGA 1851 & AMD AM5
If you are moving to Intel’s Arrow Lake (Core Ultra 200 series), you aren’t just swapping a CPU; you’re dealing with slightly different physics.
The LGA 1851 socket has shifted the thermal hotspot slightly compared to LGA 1700. While many old coolers are technically compatible mechanically, they aren’t optimized.
-
The 2026 Trend: We are seeing “offset mounting” brackets becoming standard on high-end blocks like the Alphacool Core and Heatkiller series. These shift the cold plate a few millimeters to center it directly over the compute tile, dropping temps by 3-5°C.
-
Don’t Forget AM5: With the Ryzen 9000 series pushing high frequencies, the “delidding” craze is back. Keep an eye out for our upcoming guide on direct-die cooling frames later this month!
3. The “Screen-ification” of Loops
In 2026, if it doesn’t have a screen, does it even cool? (Kidding… mostly).
Functionality is merging with aesthetics. Gone are the days of simple flow spinners that get stuck. The standard for 2026 is real-time OLED data integration.
-
The Upgrade: The Barrowch OLED Flow Meters and Temperature Sensors are flying off our shelves. They offer accurate, real-time readouts of your coolant temp and flow rate (L/h) directly in the loop, often powered by a single SATA or fan header—no bloatware required.
-
These are critical for monitoring pump health, especially in complex dual-radiator loops.
4. Wall-Mounted & Open Air “Showcases”
Standard “box” cases are taking a backseat this year to open-air chassis designs. We’ve seen a 40% spike in interest for the ABK Wall-Mounted Case series.
Why? Because with components looking this good (and running this hot), you don’t want to trap them in a box. Open-air rigs offer zero airflow restriction for your radiators, allowing your Hardware Labs Black Ice Nemesis GTS rads to breathe freely, keeping fan noise to a minimum even under load.
FTC Spotlight: Custom “Pro Laser” Services
With the rise of “Project Zero” and “BTF” (Back-To-Future) motherboards that hide connectors on the back, standard cases often don’t fit right.
Did you know we can fix that? FTC’s Pro Laser Services can create custom acrylic distribution plates or modify existing case panels to fit your specific hardware. If you are building a unique RTX 5090 loop and need a custom pass-through plate, we can design and cut it for you.
Looking Ahead: This Month at FTC
We are kicking off 2026 with a month of heavy hitters. Here is what is coming up on the blog:
-
Next Week: A deep dive installation guide for the RTX 5090 Astral Blocks.
-
Week 3: The showdown—EKWB vs. Alphacool for 50-series cards.
-
Week 4: A beginner’s guide to choosing tubing for 2026 builds.
